ESPN XGames History
The Director of Programming Ron Semiao of ESPN came up with the idea of holding a contest for athletes from the alternative, or extreme, sports in 1993. After two years of training for the event, the first Extreme Games known as the XGames were held in Rhode Island at Mount Snow, Vermont, from June 24 through July 1, 1995.You can search for WWE Tickets on this page. Competition in nine sports involved 198,000 spectators. Because of the accomplishment ESPN decided to do it again in 1996 when the name was altered to the XGames.
The event was again hosted in Rhode Island. This time the event drew around 200,000 viewers. Later, the network ESPN had announced that the first Winter XGames would be held at the "Snow Summit Mountain Resort", in Big Bear Lake, California, from January 30 through February 2, 1997, featuring contest in ice climbing, shovel racing, snowboarding, snow mountain bike racing, and a multi-sport crossover.
The 1997 and 1998 Summer XGames were also held in San Diego. The second Winter XGames, in 1998, were held at Crested Butte, Colorado. Crested Butte also hosted the Winter Games later in 1999. Then that summer, the Summer Games were stirred to San Francisco for two years.
Summer turnout climbed a lot over the three years, to 221,000 in 1997, 233,000 in 1998, and 275,000 in 1999. ESPN hasn't reveal their attendance total since then.
Attendance at the Winter XGames hasn't been almost as good as the Summer XGames. Big Bear Lake drew 38,000 spectators in 1997, but that dropped to 25,000 in 1998 and was rounded off "more than 30,000" in 1999.
The Winter X Games then stirred to Mount Snow, Vermont, which drew 83,500 people in 2000. However, that dropped to about 50,000 in 2001. Again, ESPN hasn't released turnout figures since then.
The Summer X-Games were held in Philadelphia in 2001 and 2002, while the Winter XGames encouraged to Aspen, Colorado, for two years, beginning in 2003. ESPN has come up with several other proceedings related to the XGames. They are the X Trials which are qualifying events; the XGames Road Show is a two-day interactive expo that engagements all around the country; and the Xperience are a promotional tour for the XGames. In 2004 XGames moved to Los Angeles Staples Center. And now in 2007 XGames are back to Los Angeles Staples Center and Home Depot Center, and we have all XGames tickets.
The Summer XGames consist of the following extreme sports competitions: Bike Stunts, Moto X, Speed Climb, Moto X Freestyle, Wakeboard, Skateboard Street, Aggressive In-line Skate, Downhill BMX.
The Winter XGames consist of the following extreme sports competitions: Snowmobile, Snowboarder, Ski Slopestyle, Skier X M&W Practice, Skiing Superpipe Practice, Moto X Big Air, UltraCross, Snowmobile Cross, Snowmobile HillCross.
